Tei Shi is Valerie Teicher—born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, raised between Bogota, Colombia, and Vancouver, Canada, she now lives in New York after graduating from Boston’s Berklee College of Music. Her new album, Crawl Space, out now from Downtown Records, is her coming-of-age diary transposed into music.

As we hear in the album opener, Teicher began writing and recording at eight, which was also the same age she locked herself in her house’s crawl space to fight her fear of the dark every night. Now, the safe space she seeks for a respite from her anxiety is music.

Drawing inspiration from artists like Fiona Apple, Debbie Harry, and PJ Harvey, Tei Shi writes and produces her own unique sound, mixing R&B, pop, and South American vibes. The album is a sampling of experiences from her own life: her struggle with destructive relationships, painful breakups, self-doubt and finding strength to move on in life, and her multicultural background. Watch two videos from the album below.
